A parallel run writes one patch file per spacetree (and rank) and snapshot.
merge.py glues the files of each snapshot into one file. It yields few large files instead of many small ones, which is handy to archive or to transfer data, and which makes render.py and probe.py open fewer files. The script works with ASCII files and with files with binary quantities (see Peano patch files), and it does not rely on ParaView/pvpython or vtk.
The script takes the meta file of a simulation, i.e. the file which links to the snapshot files. For every snapshot, it writes a file merged_patch_file_<snapshot>.peano-patch-file into the directory of the meta file. It also writes merged_meta_file.peano-patch-file, which links to the merged files. The latter file is a meta file like any other, i.e. you hand it over to render.py or probe.py instead of the original meta file. The merged files keep the format of the input: If you merge files with binary quantities, you get files with binary quantities.
The options are
The header of a merged file is the header of the first partial file. It holds the format, the dimensions and the description of the data sets. The script then appends all patches of all partial files of the snapshot. Patches are copied byte by byte, i.e. the script does not parse the values and a merge neither loses precision nor changes a file's format. All partial files of a snapshot therefore have to have the same format and the same data sets, which they do if they stem from one run.
